Clinical Hypnosis
Clinical hypnosis or hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis by a trained health care provider to reduce medical or psychological symptoms, and to improve function and wellbeing.
It is offered by our physician, either in the office or online, for pain reduction, phobias, past trauma, and other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Patients who benefit from this notice an improvement within the first 3 sessions. For IBS there is a standard 7 session protocol spread over approximately 3 months.

Neurofeedback
Neurofeedback, is offered by our registered clinical counsellor with a Masters Degree in Counselling Psychology. The system we use is called Neurogen High Performance Neurofeedback (HPN), sometimes referred to as microcurrent or direct neurofeedback (DNF).
Pain Reprocessing Therapy
Pain Reprocessing Therapy is a mindfulness-based specialized approach, focusing on the treatment of nociplastic pain through innovative neuroscience-based techniques, aimed at retraining the brain to reinterpret chronic pain signals and reduce pain perception.
Pain is a danger signal. Fear is the fuel that drives chronic nociplastic pain. Calming fear through simple clear information about the nature of pain and the brain, through mindfulness or clinical hypnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Pain Reprocessing Therapy be combined with other treatments?
Yes, Pain Reprocessing Therapy can be combined with other treatments such as Clinical Hypnosis and psychological counselling to provide a comprehensive approach to managing chronic pain, in addition to conventional medical management.
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is an evidence-based approach to pain education, mindfulness, and somatic tracking (being aware of physical sensations that no longer need to be interpreted as danger signals). These insights are incorporated into pain rehabilitation counselling for patients with physical and emotional pain, anxiety, and past trauma. It can be used as a stand-alone technique or combined with CBT and clinical hypnosis as well as other psychotherapeutic modalities. You can read more about the approach at the Pain Reprocessing Therapy Center .
Alan Gordon LCSW, author of The Way Out and developer of Pain Reprocessing Therapy has set up a 21 day program that can introduce you to the PRT principles. You can you can access it online free of charge.
This program overlaps with some of the information available on his podcast, "Tell Me About Your Pain" on iOS and Google and in the Facebook groups Tell Me About Your Pain Community and Tell Me About Your Pain (Pain Psychology Center).
The Pain Reprocessing Therapy team have some informative videos on their resources page (scroll down to the bottom of this page).
What is Clinical Hypnosis and how can it help me?
Clinical Hypnosis is a therapeutic technique that uses guided relaxation, intense concentration, and focused attention to achieve a heightened state of awareness, or trance. It can help with pain management, anxiety, stress, and behavioral changes by accessing the subconscious mind to promote healing and positive change.
Clinical hypnosis is about helping you take control of those parts of your life that don’t have to be out of control any more. Patients experience clinical hypnosis as a pleasant, relaxing, and conversational process while sitting or reclining comfortably. They remain aware of their surroundings and are free to move or adjust posture if needed to feel even more comfortable. In this process your mind will be active and alert the entire time. You’ll hear what is said, and remember as much as you would from any normal conversation. You will be encouraged to use your imagination and to find resources within yourself of which you may not have been previously aware.
Clinical hypnosis can be offered in person at our office, or online via our secure doxy.me portal.
When experiencing hypnosis by telemedicine from your own home some additional practical points should be kept in mind:
it is as effective as hypnosis in in the office.
you will need a comfortable stable supportive chair.
you need privacy and to avoid having pets and family/friends interrupting.
you need a good internet connection. If for any reason the internet connection is lost for more than 2 minutes you will emerge from hypnosis feeling rested and relaxed. We can then easily pick up from where we left off when connection is resumed.
Your computer or tablet needs to be stationary on a stable surface to allow your hands to be free.
an alternative way of communicating is needed (eg landline or cellphone) that I can call if connection is lost.
Your well-being and safety are our first considerations always. Online hypnotherapy has been shown to be safe, effective, and enjoyable.

Tell me more about Neurofeedback
Neurogen HPN uses four tiny sensors gently applied to the skin to measure the electrical brainwaves (EEG or electroencephalogram) that are displayed on a computer screen.
First, we book an appointment for an initial consultation with one of our physicians.
Next, we book your first neurofeedback appointment. Sites on your forehead, temples, and scalp are cleaned with alcohol and small dabs of conductive paste applied.
Using an extremely low-strength microcurrent (1/1000 of that of an AA battery), the equipment sends a tiny signal to the brain that causes a slight alteration in brain waves. This allows the brain to reorganize its stuck patterns and establish healthy ones. The effects of Neurogen HPN are powerful and long-lasting, treating the symptoms at source within the nervous system.
Is clinical hypnosis covered by the provincial medical plan or private insurance?
It is not covered by MSP in BC. We are not aware of any extended medical plans that cover hypnosis by a physician. Some private insurance plans may include coverage for hypnosis when provided by a registered clinical counsellor or psychologist when included in psychotherapy. Fees for uninsured services such as hypnosis are due at the time of service or before.
